![]() Whichever OS you had running last will boot upon the next start-up. You must shut down one before booting to the other. What Boot Camp doesn't let you do is run both operating systems at the same time. ![]() We were able to connect to our LAN and the Internet, and even play a game of Minesweeper. ![]() ![]() From our first pass with Windows on the iMac, however, the system appeared to be fully operational. We were still missing a USB driver and a PCI driver, along with some unknowns. We installed the contents of the driver disc that Boot Camp had us create, which filled in most, but not all, of the gaps. It's alive!Ī quick scan of the Device Manager showed that we were a few drivers short of a full deck. The Windows installation proceeded per its norm, the iMac restarted, and we were looking at the strange site of the glossy white iMac framing the familiar XP Bliss wallpaper. Note: You must supply your own copy of Windows you can use either Home or Pro, but Apple's documentation states that it must include SP2. The default was a paltry 5GB for Windows we upped it to an even 100GB, then inserted a Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2 disc. After ejecting our newly minted driver disc, Boot Camp then asked us how we'd like to partition our iMac's 250GB hard drive. We were then prompted to burn a disc of Windows drivers (for the iMac Core Duo's video and audio adapters, peripherals, wired and wireless networking adapters, and so on), which are included in the Boot Camp download. Before we could run the app, we first had to update our iMac to Mac OS X 10.4.6, followed by a quick firmware update. We installed Boot Camp on the iMac Core Duo the software will also work with the Mac Mini and the MacBook Pro. Boot Camp, therefore, isn't the first time the world will see Windows running on a Mac, but it certainly makes the process much easier. Interest in running Windows on a Mac has been evident ever since Steve Jobs announced the Intel-based iMac this past January, and it reached a crescendo last month with various contests for finding a hack to run Windows on an Intel Mac. We don't, however, expect to see Windows preinstalled on Macs anytime soon (Apple makes it very clear it will not support Windows). The 83MB download is available as beta software, and Boot Camp will be included in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard later this year. There are, however, some methods that let users install Linux on Apple Silicon Macs without Boot Camp, but there are still some compatibility issues.Apple released Boot Camp, a free download that lets you run Windows on an Intel-based Mac. An exclusive deal between Microsoft and Qualcomm, which is about to expire, would be one of the reasons why there’s no commercial versions of Windows available for ARM-based computers. Macs with an Apple Silicon chip (M1 and M2) can only run Windows through virtual machines with software like Parallels.Īpple’s VP of software engineering Craig Federighi once suggested that “it’s really up to Microsoft” to make Windows compatible with M1 and M2 Macs. It’s worth noting that, at least for now, Boot Camp remains available only for Macs with Intel processors. In order to update Boot Camp drivers on your Mac, click on the Start menu when running Windows and then open the Apple Software Update tool. However, Boot Camp 6.1.17 wasn’t made available for users who don’t have a Studio Display (so this probably explains why today’s update has the number 6.1.16). This allowed Apple’s new external display to also work with Windows. As noted by MacRumors, the latest Boot Camp Utility update also fixes a Bluetooth driver issue that could occur after waking the computer from Sleep or Hibernation modes.Įarlier this year Apple released Boot Camp 6.1.17 with drivers for the Studio Display. Boot Camp version 6.1.16 allows Mac users to connect to WPA3 Wi-Fi networks when using Windows.īut this is not the only change coming with this update. The new standard also adds more protection for public Wi-Fi networks, and it works better with IoT (internet of things). Today’s update brings Wi-Fi improvements, as it adds support for the WPA3 standard.įor those unfamiliar, WPA3 is a new Wi-Fi protocol that makes the network even more secure against brute-force attacks. Apple on Monday released an update to Boot Camp Utility, the company’s tool that lets Intel Mac users run Windows natively on their Apple computers.
